The Apache Way - Nick Burch, Quanticate
The ""Apache Way"" is the process by which Apache Software Foundation projects are managed. It has evolved over many years and has produced over 100 highly successful open source projects. But what is it and how does it work?

In this session we'll discover at how an Apache project is (and isn't!) managed. We will see how the foundation provides an technical and legal infrastructure for each project, and how the Apache Way provides the governance scaffolding for individual projects. This provides the framework for Apache projects which are then free to apply the Apache Way to ensure their project succeeds.

Having attended this session you will have a better understanding of the inner workings of both the foundation and its projects. With this understanding you will be better equipped to engage with and benefit from Apache projects.

Bending The Rules: Community Over Code Over Policy - Andrea Pescetti, Apache OpenOffice PMC
A popular misconception in some circles is that Apache values policy so much that it effectively damages a project's opportunity to grow. Reality is, whenever the Apache policy gets in the way of a project something is wrong. But the current policy and practices were conceived as tools to help projects rather than damaging them. The incubation (and, later, the presence) of OpenOffice at Apache brought the need to rethink several policy issues and set precedents for new ones. In most cases, we found the solution by going back to the rationale for a policy and implementing it in the right way for our case. We'll see several examples of cases where policy was reinterpreted in order to help the project and not to obstacle it.

Sharing Apache's Goodness: How We Should Be Telling Apache's Story - Joe 'Zonker' Brockmeier, Red Hat
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) excels at many things - fostering strong open source communities, creating excellent software, providing infrastructure to do the work, and providing a framework to verify the software before it's released.

But many projects want more from a foundation. In particular, they want to ensure that the world knows about the good work that they're doing, and the contributors want a foundation to provide resources to help take on tasks that developers typically do not enjoy or do well.

In this talk, Brockmeier will make the case for marketing FOSS projects in general, and specifically why Apache needs to evolve to help not only create software for the public good, but promote its projects as well.

Patches Welcome - Contributing To Apache Projects In A Nutshell - Isabel Drost-Fromm, Elasticsearch
For an outsider the way open source projects in general and Apache projects in particular work seems complex and hard to understand. Cultural differences not only between corporate work and open source collaboration but also across projects make things even harder.

This talk tries to outline some of the basics of what makes a successful committer at Apache: Why should you understand the culture and get involved if you are using one of the Apache projects? What are valuable contributions? How do you stay committed without over committing yourself in case someone invites you to become official committer?

RTFM? Write a Better FM! - Rich Bowen, ASF
Ever notice that the projects most likely to tell you to RTFM tend to have the worst FM? That's because the virtues of a docs team - Dilligence, Patience, and Humility - happen to be the virtues of kinder politer people, too.

Come learn some tips of writing better documentation, providing better end-user support, and just possibly growing your project community.

Rich has been doing Open Source documentation for 20 years, and some folks say he's kind of good at it.

A Development Analytics Dashboard For Apache Cloudstack - Jesus M Gonzalez-Barahona, Bitergia
The Apache CloudStack Development Analytics Dashboard helps to better understand how the project is evolving and performing. Using information from git, Jira and mailing lists, several charts and numbers provide some insight on relevant parameters of the project. The talk will explain the meaning of the different panels in the dashboard, and will use them and some complementary quantitative data to analyze specific aspects of the inner life of the project. Those will be used to describe the CloudStack community, its activity, and some of their most important development processes.

Apache Incubator: The Gateway Into The “Apache Way” And A Continual Mentoring Venue - Suresh Marru, ASF & Roman Shaposhnik, Pivotal
New projects enter the Apache Software Foundation through the Incubator program. Wealth of IPMC members guide the podlings teaching the Apache Way. Mentors and incubator community assist in learning through the releases process, albeit sometimes in a hard way. As the podlings graduate and enter into a self-governance mode, the priority of making stringent releases and the vigor of community engagement is often diluted. This talk will cover the perspective of those incubating project members who later came back to the incubator to help others learn from mistakes they made. Pay it forward or perverse sense of payback -- you’ll be the judge. Either way, Apache Incubator is a unique project under the ASF umbrella that brings together a diverse set of members all bound by the same goal: keep the “Apache Way” spirit alive in the projects joining the foundation and graduated projects.

But We're Already Open Source! Why Would I Want To Bring My Code To Apache? - Nick Burch, Quanticate
So, your business has already opened sourced some of it's code? Great! But now, someone's asking you about giving it to these Apache people? What's up with that, and why isn't just being open source enough?

In this talk, we'll look at several real world examples of where companies have chosen to contribute their existing open source code to the Apache Software Foundation. We'll see the advantages they got from it, the problems they faced along the way, why they did it, and how it helped their business. We'll also look briefly at where it may not be the right fit.

Wondering about how to take your business's open source involvement to the next level, and if contributing to projects at the Apache Software Foundation will deliver RoI, then this is the talk for you!

Contributing To CouchDB - Jan Lehnardt, ASF
Become a Hero!

Open Source projects are only as good as the people that work on them. A project's first objective should be to increase its developer base. Consequently, this talk invites you to learn what little it takes to make a meaningful contribution to CouchDB.

This talk is a tour through the CouchDB Apache project and wider community. It explains the way the peoject works and where it can be improved, and how.

One of the bigger stumbling blocks for contributors is CouchDB's implementation language Erlang. However, there is plenty to do without ever touching Erlang and we'll show you what you can do.

Finally, if you are not afraid to dive in, we'll give you a gentle introduction to CouchDB's Erlang implementation.

Introduction To Apache jclouds - Ignasi Barrera, Abiquo
Apache jclouds is an open source library that helps you get started in the cloud and utilizes your Java or Clojure development skills. The jclouds API gives you the freedom to use portable abstractions or cloud-specific features. It's a multi-cloud toolkit that works with both public and private clouds.

There is a great community behind this toolkit working together to provide a better experience for developers in the cloud. Their goal is to simplify the control of many different clouds while still giving you the freedom to use cloud-specific features. The result is a toolkit that allows developers to write better code, in a shorter period of time, that works with supported clouds.

Learn about what jclouds can do for you.

It will also discuss differences between providers, scaling out the number of clients and number of objects, and tradeoffs in application design.

Taming The Cloud Database With Apache jclouds - Zack Shoylev, Rackspace
Managing application infrastructure is not what developers want to spend time figuring out. The challenge of quickly automating facets of application development such as database infrastructure setup is still present in many cloud application projects. This presentation will introduce developers to current cloud services (private and public clouds, terminology, service types, OpenStack) and relevant Java SDKs. This will include discussing the advantages of using open source, portable, and provider-agnostic solutions versus more closed systems. The talk will describe high-level jclouds architecture and present code examples to manage cloud-based database infrastructure using OpenStack Trove. Due to popular demand, a short tutorial on implementing abstraction layers and custom APIs for databases in jclouds will also be presented.
