Apache Brooklyn recently joined the Incubator. Brooklyn can be described using phrases like "automated management of cloud applications" and "simplified deployment and runtime management of enterprise-grade applications", but soundbites like those only scratch the surface of what Brooklyn can do. In this presentation, Richard Downer will show what Brooklyn is, how it can help you, and how to develop with it. Afterwards, whenever you see the tagline "application modelling, monitoring and management", you'll realise that's *WAY* cooler than it sounds.

Deploying enterprise-class distributed applications to Docker containers spanning multiple hosts is tricky. Dealing with port forwarding, firewalls and injecting configuration into containers for inter-dependencies are just some of the problems.

We will show how Apache Brooklyn's cloud abstractions can be used to simplify the deployment and management of a complex application to a virtual Docker infrastructure. Brooklyn will create and maintain the required Docker containers in the right locations for your application, and control and manage the software and services using policies to scale both the application and infrastructure based on their state.

We will demonstrate deploying simple multi-tier web applications and also a complex financial risk analytics application from OpenGamma, onto a Docker infrastructure.

Apache Stratos is a highly-extensible Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) framework that helps run Apache Tomcat, PHP, and MySQL applications and can be extended to support many more environments on all major cloud infrastructures. For developers, Stratos provides a cloud-based environment for developing, testing, and running scalable applications. IT providers benefit from high utilization rates, automated resource management, and platform-wide insights, including monitoring and billing.

This session will focus on the roadmap for Apache Stratos and how it can become a disruptive force in the current PaaS market.

Creating excellent software is just half the story. Getting it deployed is the other half - and we all know how challenging that can be. Thanks to Docker containers, though, deploying open source applications has never been easier!

In this presentation, we'll take a look at the basics of Docker containers, then conduct a demo of deploying a service with Docker containers. Next we'll take a look at how to create containers and deploy a service using Docker, GearD, and more.

Managing application infrastructure is not what developers want to spend time figuring out. The challenge of quickly automating facets of application development such as database infrastructure setup is still present in many cloud application projects. This presentation will introduce developers to current cloud services (private and public clouds, terminology, service types, OpenStack) and relevant Java SDKs. This will include discussing the advantages of using open source, portable, and provider-agnostic solutions versus more closed systems. The talk will describe high-level jclouds architecture and present code examples to manage cloud-based database infrastructure using OpenStack Trove. Due to popular demand, a short tutorial on implementing abstraction layers and custom APIs for databases in jclouds will also be presented.
