This talk is an overview over the past 24-36 months of the CouchDB project. Join us on a riveting tour through a near-death experience and a phoenix from the ashes-like rebirth of the project as well as major technological improvements. You will learn where Apache CouchDB stands today and where it is, boldly, going.

With the departure of its lead developer and the abandonment of the project by the company founded by three of the original CouchDB developers, many felt that CouchDB is dying. This couldn’t be further from the truth and this talk explains what happened and how CouchDB is more alive than ever and has a bright future ahead of it!

Welcome to Apache JSPWiki - a Java-based Wiki using Java Server Pages (see http://jspwiki.apache.org). The presentation starts with a technical overview of Apache JSPWiki and turns to settting up JSPWiki for different environments & requirements. These environments range from your personal "Wiki On A Stick" running from an USB stick (including native launchers) up to a work-group setup deployed on a in-house server with integrated Lucene search.

New projects enter the Apache Software Foundation through the Incubator program. Wealth of IPMC members guide the podlings teaching the Apache Way. Mentors and incubator community assist in learning through the releases process, albeit sometimes in a hard way. As the podlings graduate and enter into a self-governance mode, the priority of making stringent releases and the vigor of community engagement is often diluted. This talk will cover the perspective of those incubating project members who later came back to the incubator to help others learn from mistakes they made. Pay it forward or perverse sense of payback -- you’ll be the judge. Either way, Apache Incubator is a unique project under the ASF umbrella that brings together a diverse set of members all bound by the same goal: keep the “Apache Way” spirit alive in the projects joining the foundation and graduated projects.

Apache Subversion is one of the most widespread version control systems currently in use. Whilst it has many useful features — and several well-known deficiencies — one of the most often repeated criticisms against it is that it is not "distributed" (or, more properly, "decentralised"), since is has a central repository and does not provide local branches and similar features of most popular DVCS. In this presentation, we'll discuss the Subversion developers' plans for introducing some of these features into Subversion.

Open Source projects are only as good as the people that work on them. A project's first objective should be to increase its developer base. Consequently, this talk invites you to learn what little it takes to make a meaningful contribution to CouchDB.

This talk is a tour through the CouchDB Apache project and wider community. It explains the way the peoject works and where it can be improved, and how.

One of the bigger stumbling blocks for contributors is CouchDB's implementation language Erlang. However, there is plenty to do without ever touching Erlang and we'll show you what you can do.

Finally, if you are not afraid to dive in, we'll give you a gentle introduction to CouchDB's Erlang implementation.

CPUs that cost thousands a decade ago are now cost a few dollars. The Arduino platform has lowered barriers to entry so that people with minimal tech knowledge can create special purpose computers capable of changing the world. Open Source Hardware is in autonomous drones, 3D printers, DNA replicators, satellites, city-wide sensor networks, smart houses and wearable computers. In this talk I'll take you through what Open Source Hardware is and isn't, OSW licensing, recent advances in OSW, show a range of projects and demonstrate what's possible now, and warn about some the threats (lack of protocol standards and vendor lock in to name two) that may hinder the growth of Open Source Hardware.
